Flying Fijians Gear Up for Epic Battle Against Samoa in PNC Opener

Fiji’s rugby head coach Mick Byrne has unveiled a formidable lineup for today’s Pacific Nations Cup (PNC) opener against Samoa at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Byrne emphasized that this selection represents the best combination of players available from both the Northern and Southern hemispheres.

The team has shown impressive form during training, although a couple of injuries are being monitored. Byrne acknowledged the pressure of the match, stating it’s a “healthy pressure” that comes with being the defending PNC champions, particularly in their first home game.

He expressed his anticipation for the performance of Fijian Drua players Iosefo Masi and Selestino Ravutaumada now that they have completed their Olympic sevens program. The team features new combinations, including Inia Tabuavou in the center along with Masi, and a fully fit Caleb Muntz. Players Vuate Karawalevu and Apisalome Vota are also expected to contribute significantly.

Byrne is preparing for a tough contest from a powerful Samoan forward pack, noting their reputation for physical play. He stressed the need for his players to be ready to defend against Samoa’s aggressive short ball tactics. As both teams gear up for what promises to be an intense physical battle, Byrne remains focused on ensuring his squad is well-prepared for the challenge ahead.
