Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne has announced a robust lineup of 23 players for today’s Pacific Nations Cup (PNC) opener against Samoa at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
Byrne stated, “This is the best combination we can select, utilizing both Northern and Southern Hemisphere players.” He noted that the team has shown impressive form during training, although they are monitoring a few injuries closely.
Byrne acknowledged feeling a manageable pressure ahead of the match against Samoa, as the Flying Fijians enter as the defending PNC champions. He remarked, “It’s healthy pressure; that’s how you survive, and there’s always a bit of nerves in the first home game.” He emphasized the importance of ensuring the team is fully prepared.
Looking ahead, Byrne expressed excitement about the Fijian Drua players, Iosefo Masi and Selestino Ravutaumada, showcasing their talents after completing their Olympic Games sevens commitments. He also highlighted new partnerships in the team, including Inia Tabuavou joining Masi and the return of a fully fit Caleb Muntz. Vuate Karawalevu and Apisalome Vota are also expected to make significant contributions on the field.
Byrne anticipated a formidable challenge from the Samoan forward pack, stating, “We understand they will come hard at us, and our players thrive in physical battles. The battle of the islands often hinges on the strength of the forward packs.” He also mentioned the need to be cautious of the Samoan backline, emphasizing the importance of maintaining defensive readiness against their tackles and plays. He concluded that it would be a thrilling contest, highlighting the expectation of a gritty battle upfront.
