Flying Fijians’ Future Under Scrutiny: What’s Next for the Team?

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is scheduled to present a review of the team’s recent performances to the Fiji Rugby Union board this week. FRU CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu mentioned that this is a standard procedure, allowing the board to assess all performance aspects at the end of each campaign.

Byrne has returned from Australia and will discuss insights from the recent tour. Nayacalevu commented on the board’s feelings regarding the team’s performance, stating that although they were disappointed with the outcome against the All Blacks, the victory over Georgia and the subsequent improvement in the team’s world ranking were positive developments worth building on.

Concerns were raised about the limited access to players, particularly because the Barbarians match in Twickenham took place during the Super Rugby season and outside the World Rugby access window. Nayacalevu described these as significant issues.

He highlighted that all staff members, including Byrne, have key performance indicators (KPIs) outlined in their job descriptions. Any directives would be issued following the review process once Coach Mick returns to Fiji.

Additionally, Nayacalevu confirmed that Flying Fijians manager Eleina McDonald has submitted her resignation after the recent tour.
