The head coach of the Flying Fijians, Mick Byrne, is set to present a review of the team’s recent performances to the Fiji Rugby Union board this week. FRU CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu stated that this is a standard procedure to evaluate all aspects of the team’s performance at the end of each campaign.
Byrne has recently returned from Australia and is expected to provide insights regarding the recent tour. When asked about the board’s satisfaction with the Flying Fijians’ performance, Nayacalevu acknowledged that while the loss against the All Blacks was disappointing, the victory over Georgia and the subsequent improvement in world rankings are positive outcomes to leverage for future growth.
Nayacalevu expressed concerns regarding limited player access, noting that the match against the Barbarians in Twickenham occurred during the Super Rugby season and outside of the World Rugby access window. He emphasized that these are two significant areas of concern.
Furthermore, he pointed out that all staff members, including Byrne, have established key performance indicators (KPIs) which are part of their job descriptions. Any directives will be issued following the upcoming review process once Coach Mick returns to the island.
In another update, Nayacalevu confirmed that Flying Fijians manager Eleina McDonald has resigned from her position following the recent tour.
