The Fiji Rugby Union interim board chairman, Peter Mazey, has stated that the FIJI Water Flying Fijians will not receive any bonuses for winning matches during their upcoming November tour. This decision came after a request from a player through the players’ welfare association, but the union has decided against it, emphasizing the need for financial responsibility.
Mazey remarked, “We do not agree with it; the union supported this law enough is enough.” He further explained that while bonuses might be considered for significant achievements, such as the Rugby World Cup, the current financial state of the union does not allow for additional bonus payments. The Rugby World Cup campaign incurred costs amounting to $11 million, with a substantial portion allocated to player expenses.
Board member Jenny See-to added that bonuses typically come from the government, and the union lacks the funds needed to provide bonuses on its own. She highlighted the importance of governmental support in facilitating these payments.
This situation underlines the financial challenges faced by sports organizations, especially in maintaining a balance between rewarding athletes and managing budgets. Despite the lack of bonuses for the upcoming matches, the focus on playing for national pride remains strong, reinforcing the values of teamwork and dedication to the sport and country.
In summary, while the Flying Fijians will not receive bonuses for their November matches, both union officials emphasize a commitment to national representation and responsible financial management. This approach aims to ensure long-term sustainability for the Fiji Rugby Union, enabling them to invest in future successes.
