The Flying Fijians, the defending champions of the Pacific Nations Cup, will face Japan as underdogs in the final match scheduled for Sunday in Osaka. Coached by Eddie Jones, the Japanese team is riding a wave of confidence following a decisive 49-27 victory over Manu Samoa in the semi-finals held in Tokyo.
Japan showcased an impressive display of attacking rugby, scoring six tries compared to Samoa’s three. Under Jones’ guidance, the team is making significant strides in its development as they aim for their first trophy since 2019. The coach has emphasized the need for improvement in their defensive strategies around the ruck to secure a win against the formidable Fijian side.
“Our only goal is to win the final,” Jones stated, noting the challenge posed by Fiji and expressing optimism for the upcoming week of preparation.
During the semi-final, Japan dominated the first half by scoring four tries while Samoa managed only one. Dylan Riley opened the scoring early, capitalizing on pressure in Samoa’s territory. A penalty try was awarded shortly thereafter due to a sin-bin infraction by Samoan winger Elisapeta Alofipo, allowing Japan to build momentum.
Seungsin Lee, named Player of the Match, played a crucial role, scoring a try and setting up others with skillful kick-passes. Despite being a player down, Samoa fought back with a try from Tuna Tuitama and penalties from Rodney Iona, keeping the score competitive.
In the second half, Lee continued to shine, orchestrating plays and assisting in tries as Japan maintained control of the match. Samoa responded with determination, including a try from Melani Matavao, but ultimately, Japan’s scoring power kept them ahead.
Captain Theo McFarland acknowledged that discipline issues hindered Samoa’s performance, particularly in the first 20 minutes. He noted that errors and set-piece failures disrupted their rhythm.
As the final approaches, both teams will be looking to capitalize on their strengths, with Japan aiming to secure a significant championship victory on home soil.
