The Fiji Rugby Union has announced that the Flying Fijians will not receive performance bonuses during their upcoming November tour. This declaration was made by Peter Mazey, the chairman of the interim board of the union. He clarified that while a player had approached the players’ welfare association regarding the possibility of bonuses, the board disagreed with the request.
Mazey emphasized the financial constraints faced by the union, stating, “We all have to live on what we earn and we can’t afford to keep doing this,” referring to the substantial costs incurred during the Rugby World Cup, which amounted to approximately $11 million. He highlighted that a significant portion of that expense was directed towards player compensation.
Furthermore, fellow board member Jenny See-to indicated that bonuses are typically funded through government support, rather than from the union’s budget. She reiterated that the union relies on the generosity of the government for such financial incentives.
In essence, the union remains focused on prioritizing the financial stability required to support the members and the overall objectives of the Rugby Union.
