Fiji Water Flying Fijians coach Mick Byrne has expressed optimism about the upcoming 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, highlighting it as a unique opportunity for Fiji to face off against unfamiliar rivals on a prestigious platform. The format of the tournament, alongside the high-level competition involved, will necessitate meticulous preparation from week to week, according to Byrne.

He emphasized the exhilaration that comes with competing in front of large Pacific support within Australia. “Being a Rugby World Cup, it’s a great opportunity to step into,” Byrne remarked, noting the unpredictable nature of facing different opponents beyond the pool stages.

The demanding seven-match campaign will serve as a significant test of the team’s depth and resilience, as it also opens doors for Fiji to encounter teams they seldom meet, such as Argentina, with whom Fiji last played in 2003. Moreover, Byrne recognizes that staging the tournament in Australia brings a considerable advantage, as it’s anticipated that passionate local fans will transform stadiums into “home” venues for the team.

Currently, the Flying Fijians are awaiting the official match schedules, which are expected to be released early next year. These schedules will aid in finalizing base locations and community engagement plans, ensuring the team is well-prepared for the challenges ahead.
