Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is experimenting with various combinations within his 28-member squad during the Pacific Nations Cup (PNC). In an interview, Byrne noted that the interactions between the forwards and backs are consistently developing.
“It’s a small squad; 28 players isn’t a large number,” he commented. “We have our backs and possibly one or two extra, which allows us to try out different combinations without the need to stretch our resources.”
Byrne acknowledged uncertainty about the final combinations as the competition progresses, stressing that the process is ongoing. “We’re working through different setups, ensuring that every player is included. There aren’t any players sidelined without an opportunity.”
Looking ahead to the challenge of facing Tonga next Friday, Byrne expressed familiarity with the typical dynamics. “Competing in Tonga feels similar to playing Fiji in Fiji or Samoa in Samoa. We understand the passionate support for home teams in the Pacific Islands,” he explained.
“While it presents a bit of pressure for us, it’s vital to stay focused on our objectives amid the noise from the crowd. We’re eager for the challenge, just as teams feel when they come to play us.”
In other news, heavyweight prop Ben Tameifuna will lead Tonga in their opening match against Samoa in Apia, a game that both teams must win.
