The Flying Fijians have been honored as the Team of the Year at the 2024 Fiji Sports Awards Night, celebrated in Suva this past Saturday. Guided by head coach Mick Byrne, the team showcased their impressive skills with a significant 41-17 victory over Japan to secure the Pacific Nations Cup and further demonstrated their prowess by defeating Wales 24-19 during their November Tour.
Selesitino Ravutaumada, the talented winger for the Flying Fijians and Drua, earned the title of Sportsman of the Year, while referee Lavenia Racaca received the Technical Official of the Year award for her distinguished officiating at the HSBC World Sevens Series and the recent Paris Olympics. Although Mick Byrne did not win the Coach of the Year award—an accolade that went to Freddy Fatiaki, the coach of Athletics Fiji—the Flying Fijians’ triumphs continue to highlight the team’s remarkable progress in international rugby.
This recognition reflects not only the team’s achievements but also the growing strength of Fijian rugby on the world stage, fostering national pride. The awards serve as a motivational force for athletes across various sports in Fiji, encouraging them to strive for excellence and contribute to the country’s rich sporting legacy. With continued support and dedication, Fiji can look forward to even more success in the future.
