Flying Fijians Coach Highlights Gap in Rugby Competitions

There is a significant difference in conditioning and game speed between players in the Skipper Cup and those competing in the Super Rugby Pacific competition. This observation was made by Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne during an interview. He explained that Naitasiri hooker Kavaia Tagivetaua was the sole local-based provincial player included in the Flying Fijians squad for the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup.

Byrne noted that professional rugby involves a structured routine of training and playing, and emphasized the need for Skipper Cup teams to enhance their fitness levels to meet the demands of higher-level rugby. He expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Skipper Cup coaches to bridge the gap between the two competitions.

Byrne mentioned receiving positive scientific feedback from players participating in the Skipper Cup regarding their energy levels. He identified emerging talents that could be integrated into the Fijian Warriors program and expressed hopes that some of these players might eventually join the Drua franchise club.

In terms of squad dynamics, the inclusion of France-based player Adrea Cocagi aims to strengthen the second-five eighth position. Cocagi, a specialized second-five-eight, has been making significant contributions for Castres in the Top 14 competition. Byrne highlighted Cocagi’s strong running capabilities and looked forward to his performance in the upcoming matches.

Cocagi has previously played two Test matches for the Flying Fijians under coach Vern Cotter. He comes from Nuku Village in Serua and has a background with Lomary Secondary School and the National Rugby League’s Newcastle Knights.

Byrne noted that the Pacific Nations Cup will serve as an important platform for evaluating players. He also indicated that hooker Zuriel Togiatama was not selected due to family commitments in Auckland, New Zealand, and that he had spoken to Simione Kuruvoli, who has been consistently playing since the World Cup, suggesting that Kuruvoli deserves some time off to be with his family.

The 30-member Flying Fijians squad is set to report to camp tomorrow.
