Flying Fijians Coach Highlights Gap in Rugby Competitions

There is a noticeable disparity in conditioning and game speed between players participating in the Skipper Cup and those in the Super Rugby Pacific competition. This observation was made by Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne during an interview. He addressed the selection of Naitasiri hooker Kavaia Tagivetaua as the sole local-based provincial player named in the Flying Fijians squad for the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup.

Byrne emphasized the importance of having a fully professional rugby framework, which includes daily training and commitment to the sport. He noted that one of the key challenges ahead is to ensure that Skipper Cup teams are improving their fitness and skill levels to meet the standards required in higher-level rugby.

He expressed eagerness to collaborate with Skipper Cup coaches to bridge the gap between the two competitions. Recent scientific feedback from players in the Skipper Cup has highlighted significant energy levels and performance metrics. Byrne indicated that there are promising talents from the Skipper Cup that he looks forward to integrating into the Fijians Warriors program.

Additionally, he expressed hope that these talented players could eventually join the Drua franchise club, potentially creating pathways for advancement into the national team.

In another development, the inclusion of France-based Adrea Cocagi in the Flying Fijians squad aims to bolster the second-five eighth position. Cocagi, a specialized player in that role, has been making an impact with Castres in the Top 14 competition. Byrne praised Cocagi’s strong running abilities and looks forward to his contribution in the upcoming campaign. Having played two Test matches for the Flying Fijians, Cocagi is well-acquainted with the team’s dynamics.

Byrne also mentioned that hooker Zuriel Togiatama was left out of selection due to family matters in Auckland, New Zealand. He acknowledged that Simione Kuruvoli, who has been actively playing since the World Cup, deserves a break to spend time with his family.

The 30-member Flying Fijians squad will report to camp tomorrow.
