Flying Fijians Coach Faces Key Review Amid Performance Talks

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne will meet with the Fiji Rugby Union board this week to evaluate the team’s recent performance. FRU chief executive officer Rovereto Nayacalevu stated that this meeting is a routine procedure, as the board reviews all aspects of performance at the conclusion of each campaign.

Byrne has returned from Australia and will provide insights into the team’s recent matches during this upcoming review. When asked about the board’s satisfaction with the Flying Fijians’ performances, Nayacalevu acknowledged that while the loss to the All Blacks was disappointing, the victory over Georgia and subsequent improvement in world rankings offer a foundation for future progress.

Nayacalevu pointed out that one area of concern is the restricted access to players, especially since the match against the Barbarians in Twickenham took place during the Super Rugby season and outside the World Rugby access window. He emphasized that both staff and coaching personnel, including Byrne, have key performance indicators established in their job descriptions.

Further directives, if necessary, will be communicated after the review process once Coach Mick returns to the island. Nayacalevu also confirmed that Eleina McDonald, the manager of the Flying Fijians during the recent tour, has submitted her resignation.
