Recent low-pressure systems have resulted in heavy rainfall, leading to significant flooding in various regions, impacting several sugarcane farms. Despite the robust nature of sugarcane, challenges such as soil erosion and the potential for pest and disease outbreaks following the flood could threaten crop viability.
In response to these challenges, the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has mobilized senior researchers and field surveillance teams to evaluate the flooding’s impact on sugarcane fields. According to SRIF’s chief executive officer, Dr. Vinesh Kumar, eight teams have been deployed throughout the Western and Northern parts of Fiji to assess damage levels and provide timely, practical advice to affected farmers.
Dr. Kumar highlighted the urgency of these assessments, stating, “Our priority is to assist farmers in managing the immediate effects of the flood and to offer solutions that mitigate future risks.” SRIF is dedicated to supporting farmers during this difficult time, collaborating closely with local stakeholders to collect crucial data on crop losses, soil conditions, and the necessary measures to avert further damage.
The teams are not only evaluating the situation but are also collecting soil and plant samples to monitor potential pest and disease outbreaks that could follow the flooding. In addition, SRIF is verifying field conditions for farmers applying for the ratoon management grant, ensuring that aid is delivered swiftly to those in need.
“It is essential that support reaches those most affected, and we are working diligently to ensure the aid distribution is efficient,” Dr. Kumar asserted.
SRIF remains committed to preserving the resilience and sustainability of Fiji’s sugarcane industry. They plan to provide regular updates on their findings and subsequent action plans to keep stakeholders informed about the situation.
This proactive approach illustrates SRIF’s dedication to not only helping farmers recover from the immediate consequences of flooding but also to building a stronger and more resilient agricultural framework for the future.
In difficult times, the emphasis on collaboration and timely support showcases the hope for recovery and sustainability in Fiji’s sugarcane industry.
