Vilise Daunimasi, a 32-year-old security guard, made the decision to prioritize the safety of his family over Christmas celebrations amid rising floodwaters in his home near the Nadi River in Korovuto, Nadi. On Tuesday, he and his family found themselves as the only evacuees at Korovuto College after their home was inundated due to heavy rainfall.
Daunimasi expressed that flooding is a frequent concern during heavy rain but noted that the severity of Tuesday’s flood was unexpected. He shared how, on Christmas morning, they began preparations by packing food and clothing in anticipation of an evacuation. They called the police for assistance, ensuring that the women and children were evacuated first.
“The water reached halfway up our waists, and we were not expecting this at the end of the year—especially on Christmas Day,” he said. Despite the daunting situation, he remained grateful that there were no casualties and that his children were safe.
This article highlights the resilience of families facing natural disasters, emphasizing the importance of community and safety over holiday festivities.
