In Tavualevu Village, located in Tavua, 47 families are currently taking refuge in evacuation centers due to severe flash flooding prompted by heavy rainfall across the Western Division. Among those affected is Titilia Raibe Tamailebo, 45, who expressed her family’s distress over the loss of their home and farm. “We haven’t slept well since Thursday, worried about our property,” she noted.

The floods have devastated their farm, leaving their mattresses soaked and scattered. Early Friday, Ms. Tamailebo and her family began relocating their essential belongings to the evacuation center at Tavua District School. She was fortunate enough to transport her washing machine and fridge but lamented the loss of electricity and other kitchen appliances.

The Tamailebo family lives in a low-lying area of the village, making them particularly vulnerable to flooding from the nearby Nasivi River. Emosi Vueti, the village headman, indicated that flash flooding has become a recurrent issue, particularly with the heavy rains that have plagued the area this year. He explained that the Nasivi River has been silting due to sediment from the Vatukoula River, exacerbating the flooding problems.

Mr. Vueti is appealing for government intervention to excavate the riverbed before the situation deteriorates further. He has engaged in discussions with the Minister for Housing, Maciu Nalumisa, and other governmental bodies, highlighting the urgent need for assistance. Ms. Tamailebo has also reached out for help, particularly for mattresses and essential items lost in the flood.

The situation in Tavualevu Village underscores the critical need for infrastructure improvements and community support in addressing the ongoing challenges posed by natural disasters. While the villagers have developed resilience and strategies to cope with these flood events, the call for governmental action remains paramount to ensure their safety and recovery.

In summary, Tavualevu Village is grappling with the aftermath of severe flooding, affecting numerous families and highlighting the need for ongoing support and intervention from authorities. This serves as a reminder of the importance of community resilience and effective disaster management.
