In Tavualevu Village, Tavua, heavy rains have prompted flash floods, forcing 47 families to seek refuge in evacuation centers. Affected resident Titilia Raibe Tamailebo, 45, expressed her concern for her family’s lost property and devastated farm after moving essential items to a local evacuation center.

“The flood caused our mattresses and belongings to drift away, and we were unable to sleep well since Thursday,” said Ms. Tamailebo. Acknowledging her fortunate quick actions in saving essential appliances like her washing machine and fridge, she noted the lack of electricity complicates their situation further.

The village headman, Emosi Vueti, stated that Tavualevu has a history of flash flooding due to its proximity to the Nasivi River, which has become shallower over time due to sediment buildup from the Vatukoula River. “This year, we faced multiple flooding incidents; it has become a regular occurrence,” Vueti explained. He emphasized the urgent need for government intervention to excavate the riverbed, which could mitigate future flooding risks.

Vueti has been in discussions with government officials, including the Minister for Housing, about the ongoing issues, stressing that their pleas need action to prevent worse flooding in the future. Meanwhile, Ms. Tamailebo is calling for assistance to replace the mattresses and other belongings lost in the flood.

This situation highlights the resilience of the Tavualevu community, as they are accustomed to dealing with the challenges posed by flooding, yet emphasizes the pressing need for sustainable solutions and support from authorities. With the right interventions, there is hope that effective measures can be implemented to protect the village from future disasters.
