Recent low-pressure systems have led to significant rainfall, resulting in extensive flooding in various regions, particularly impacting sugarcane farms. Although sugarcane is known for its durability, this situation could present challenges, including soil erosion and an increased risk of pests and diseases following the floods.

To address these concerns, the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has activated its senior researchers and field surveillance teams to assess the flooding’s effects on sugarcane plantations. CEO Dr. Vinesh Kumar reported that eight teams are now present in the Western and Northern areas of Fiji to evaluate damage and offer practical recommendations to affected farmers.

Dr. Kumar stressed the need for these assessments, stating, “Our priority is to help farmers manage the immediate effects of the flood and offer them solutions to mitigate future risks.” SRIF is committed to supporting farmers during this difficult time and is collaborating closely with local stakeholders to collect valuable data on crop losses, soil conditions, and any immediate measures needed to prevent further damage.

The assessment teams are also gathering soil and plant samples to monitor for potential outbreaks of pests and diseases, which are common in the wake of flooding. Furthermore, the SRIF is verifying applications for the ratoon management grant to ensure timely assistance to those in need.

“It is crucial that the support reaches those most affected, and we’re working hard to make sure the aid is distributed efficiently,” Dr. Kumar emphasized. SRIF remains steadfast in its mission to ensure the resilience and sustainability of Fiji’s sugarcane industry. Regular updates regarding their findings and subsequent action plans will be shared to keep stakeholders informed.

This proactive approach demonstrates the dedication of SRIF to safeguard the agricultural community and uphold the sugarcane industry, which is vital to Fiji’s economy. With timely intervention and support, there is hope for farmers to recover and adapt, ensuring a brighter future for their crops and livelihoods.
