The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has undertaken a comprehensive assessment of soil erosion and the emergence of pests and diseases following recent flooding in sugar cane farms. Heavy rainfall caused significant flooding in various sugar cane regions, prompting the institute’s swift response.

“Our priority is to assist farmers in managing the immediate impacts of the flood while providing solutions to mitigate future risks,” stated SRIF CEO, Dr. Vinesh Kumar. He highlighted that SRIF teams in the Western and Northern regions have been actively collecting data on crop losses, soil conditions, and necessary measures to prevent additional damage.

Additionally, the teams have gathered soil and plant samples to track potential pest and disease outbreaks, which frequently occur after flooding events. Dr. Vinesh emphasized the institute’s dedication to supporting farmers during this difficult time.

SRIF is also conducting field verifications for those farmers who have applied for the Ratoon Management Grant to ensure that assistance reaches the most affected individuals efficiently.

This proactive approach not only aims to help mitigate the immediate challenges faced by sugar cane farmers but also fosters resilience for the future. By providing targeted support and resources, SRIF is playing a vital role in enhancing the sustainability of Fiji’s agricultural sector.

Overall, this effort represents a commitment to collaboration and recovery, which is a hopeful sign for the farming community in Fiji as they navigate the aftermath of natural disasters.
