Flooding Woes: Nadi Town’s Ongoing Battle Since the ’70s

Flooding in Nadi town has been a persistent challenge for every government since the 1970s, particularly regarding the waste management issues associated with it. During a parliamentary debate on the Review Report of the Nadi Town Council on Monday, Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya brought this matter to attention, emphasizing it as a significant concern for the council.

Koya noted that this issue has been ongoing for many years, stating, “Every single town or municipal area in Fiji has designated locations for refuse collection, but Nadi Town does not.” He pointed out that the situation has not improved over the years, though the report indicates that efforts are being made to identify a suitable site for a waste management facility.

He also presented this challenge as an opportunity to promote recycling and proper waste management practices to prevent environmental harm. Additionally, Koya praised the Nadi Town Council for successfully collecting 92 percent of its town rates, with only 8 percent remaining in arrears for the year.

He highlighted that Nadi is a growing municipality, showcasing notable development from the airport to Denarau, making it distinct from other towns and cities in Fiji.
