The Education Ministry has announced that schools in the western division will remain closed tomorrow due to persistent heavy rainfall and flooding. Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro made this decision after consultations with the National Disaster Risk Management Office and local authorities.
The Ministry indicated that continuous rain has resulted in flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas, creating unsafe road conditions and raising river levels throughout the Western Division. In contrast, schools in the Eastern, Northern, and Central Divisions are set to reopen.
Parents and guardians are urged to make their own decisions regarding their children’s school attendance, especially those living in affected regions where roads and crossings may still be hazardous. Additionally, the Ministry advises against allowing children to navigate flooded roads, creeks, or rivers, and urges the public to avoid unnecessary travel.
Heads of schools have been instructed to maintain communication with their Management Committees and District Education Offices, assessing school grounds to determine when normal operations can resume. The Ministry emphasizes that the safety and welfare of students, teachers, and families is the highest priority, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
