The persistent flooding in Naodamu Housing, Labasa, poses a serious threat to the community due to its low-lying geographical location adjacent to a river. Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima has highlighted the particular vulnerability of Naodamu and the nearby Namara area during heavy rainfall, revealing that these regions often flood as they sit below river level. “For the housing at Naodamu, that’s a low-lying area. Almost in any big rain that we have, it is flooded,” Rainima stated, indicating the urgent need for significant improvements to the area’s infrastructure.

Rainima also pointed out that the current drainage systems, including underground tunnels and exit drains, are severely inadequate, exacerbating flooding problems in Labasa. Discussions are currently underway with the Divisional Engineer North from the Fiji Roads Authority to prioritize improvements to these critical drainage exit points leading to the river, with work anticipated to begin soon.

On a positive note, Rainima reassured residents that the Naodamu and Namara neighborhoods are receiving urgent attention in terms of disaster response measures. Local authorities are actively committed to safeguarding the community during flood events. This collaboration fosters a sense of resilience and solidarity among residents, who are banding together to adapt to the flooding challenges.

The situation in Naodamu not only highlights the immediate needs of these vulnerable communities but also emphasizes the importance of investing in better infrastructure in flood-prone areas throughout Fiji. As local leaders and residents collaborate with authorities, there is a hopeful outlook for meaningful improvements that will foster a safer and more resilient future for these neighborhoods.
