Recent low-pressure systems have led to significant rainfall, resulting in widespread flooding that has impacted several regions, including numerous sugarcane farms. Although sugarcane plants are typically resilient, the flooding poses additional challenges such as soil erosion and increased risk of pests and diseases in the aftermath.
In response to this crisis, the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has deployed senior researchers and field surveillance teams to evaluate the effects of the flooding on sugarcane crops. Dr. Vinesh Kumar, the CEO of SRIF, announced that eight teams have been activated in the Western and Northern regions of Fiji to assess the damage and provide effective recommendations for affected farmers.
Dr. Kumar highlighted the critical nature of these assessments, stating, “Our priority is to help farmers manage the immediate effects of the flood and offer them solutions to mitigate future risks.” He assured that SRIF is committed to providing support and guidance during this challenging time.
The teams are working in collaboration with local stakeholders to collect vital information regarding crop losses and soil health. They are also monitoring for potential pest and disease outbreaks that can follow such flooding events by gathering soil and plant samples.
Furthermore, SRIF is verifying applications for ratoon management grants to ensure that assistance reaches farmers efficiently. Dr. Kumar said, “It is crucial that the support reaches those most affected, and we’re working hard to make sure the aid is distributed efficiently.”
The commitment of SRIF to the resilience and sustainability of Fiji’s sugarcane industry is clear. They plan to provide regular updates on their findings and the subsequent action plans to keep all stakeholders informed.
This situation, while challenging, showcases the dedication of agricultural organizations in Fiji to support local farmers and mitigate disaster impacts. By mobilizing resources and emphasizing collaboration, there is hope for recovery and resilience in the sugarcane sector.
In summary, the flooding has posed significant risks to sugarcane farms in Fiji, but with proactive measures and robust support from the SRIF, farmers can find pathways to recovery and preparation for future challenges.
