Flash floods have caused significant distress in Tavualevu Village, Tavua, where 47 families are currently taking shelter in evacuation centres following heavy rainfall across the Western Division. One affected individual, Titilia Raibe Tamailebo, shared her family’s struggles, having lost their farm and seen their belongings, including mattresses, damaged or swept away by rising waters.

Ms. Tamailebo expressed gratitude for being able to salvage some essential appliances like her washing machine and refrigerator, despite the lack of electricity. Their home, located in a low-lying area of the village, is particularly vulnerable to flooding from the nearby Nasivi River.

Village headman Emosi Vueti noted that flash flooding has become a regular occurrence in Tavualevu, especially this year with the incessant heavy rain. He highlighted the challenges posed by the Nasivi River, which is becoming increasingly shallow due to sediment accumulation from the Vatukoula River. Vueti has reached out to government officials, including the Minister for Housing, Maciu Nalumisa, for assistance in excavating the river to alleviate the flooding risk.

As families like the Tamailebos seek help, they are calling for donations of mattresses and other essential items lost in the flooding.

Despite these challenging circumstances, community resilience shines through as the villagers come together to support one another during this difficult time. The ongoing dialogue with government officials offers hope for future improvements that could mitigate such crises. Cooperation between locals and authorities could lead to effective solutions that address the perennial flooding issues in the region.

This situation underscores the need for ongoing community support and infrastructure investment to keep these families safe and protected from the natural elements.
