Recent low-pressure systems have led to significant rainfall, resulting in extensive flooding that has impacted many areas, including a number of sugarcane farms. Although sugarcane plants are generally resilient, the risks of soil erosion along with the potential for pest and disease outbreaks after the floods are considerable threats to the crop’s survival.

In light of this, the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has mobilized senior researchers and field surveillance teams to assess the damage inflicted by the flooding on sugarcane fields. According to Dr. Vinesh Kumar, CEO of SRIF, eight teams have been dispatched to regions in Western and Northern Fiji to evaluate the level of impact and to provide prompt recommendations for affected farmers.

Dr. Kumar highlighted the urgency of these assessments, noting, “Our priority is to help farmers manage the immediate effects of the flood and offer them solutions to mitigate future risks.” He assured that SRIF is dedicated to supporting farmers through this difficult time.

The SRIF teams are collaborating closely with local stakeholders to gather data on crop losses, analyze soil conditions, and identify necessary immediate actions to prevent further damage. They are also focused on collecting soil and plant samples to track any possible pest or disease outbreaks that often follow severe weather events.

Furthermore, the institute is conducting verifications for farmers applying for the ratoon management grant, emphasizing the importance of prompt assistance to ensure that help reaches those who need it most effectively. Dr. Kumar reiterated, “It is crucial that the support reaches those most affected, and we’re working hard to make sure the aid is distributed efficiently.”

SRIF remains committed to safeguarding the resilience and sustainability of Fiji’s sugarcane industry. The institute plans to provide regular updates on their findings and subsequent action plans to keep all stakeholders informed and engaged.

Overall, this proactive response from SRIF exemplifies a collaborative approach to resilience, with a focus on supporting local farmers during a challenging crisis. The commitment to sharing resources and information highlights the potential for recovery and growth within the sugarcane industry, fostering hope for a stronger future despite the adversity faced.
