The Fiji Police Force is emphasizing the need for vigilance as heavy rain and flooding impact various regions of the country this Christmas season. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, has warned that water levels are increasing, urging parents to keep their children away from flooded areas.
Driu highlighted the critical importance of safety, referencing past instances in which parents were held accountable for accidents involving their children. “The Weather Office has issued advisories for the coming days, and we are already receiving reports of flooding in several areas. We urge all parents to ensure their children stay away from floodwaters,” he stated.
Throughout the festive period, the police will monitor affected areas to reduce the risk of accidents. Driu noted, “Police will be present to oversee the situation and check on flooded locations. On Christmas Eve, we hope to prevent any unfortunate incidents.”
The Assistant Commissioner also called for cooperation from the community to ensure everyone stays safe during this festive time.
It’s a reminder that while the holiday season is often filled with joy, the weather can pose unforeseen challenges. Engaging in safety precautions can help families enjoy the festivities without the worry of accidents related to flooding. This calls for a communal effort to prioritize safety, allowing everyone to celebrate the season with peace of mind.
