Ratu Baleidreima, a 53-year-old resident of Nadi, is determined to construct a more resilient home to withstand future flooding. Recently, he, along with his wife and their five children, had to evacuate their home due to rising floodwaters, seeking refuge at Andrews Primary School, which is currently serving as an evacuation center.

In 2019, Mr. Baleidreima purchased a plot of land in Nawaijikuma Settlement, an area known for its vulnerability to floods, and built a temporary shelter for his family. Having experienced multiple evacuations during floods, he expressed a strong desire to build a raised house to protect his loved ones. However, he faces financial constraints as he prioritizes his children’s education over home construction.

His eldest child currently attends Nadi Special School, while another will begin high school next year, and the youngest three are in primary school. Mr. Baleidreima recounted the distressing moment they had to evacuate on Christmas Day, when they were interrupted during their lunch by the sudden influx of water. The family quickly gathered their essential items before being transported to safety.

As they await the water levels to recede, Mr. Baleidreima plans to return to their home to clean up and assess the damage.

This story highlights not only the challenges faced by families in flood-prone areas but also displays resilience and the hope for better living conditions. With proper assistance and community support, Mr. Baleidreima may be able to realize his dream of building a safer home, providing stability for his children’s future.
