Following recent flooding in Nadi, 190 evacuees have been instructed to return to their homes. However, five families have requested an extension of their stay due to high water levels that have not yet receded near their properties. Andrews Primary School has been serving as an evacuation center since the floods began three days ago, primarily accommodating families from the low-lying areas of Nawaijikuma and Nawakalevu settlement.
Nadi District Officer, Alifereti Abenisiga, emphasized the need for evacuees to vacate the classrooms by 3 PM yesterday, stating that while many families have begun returning home, the five remaining families expressed concerns about potential rain and their flooded homes. Despite their appeals, Abenisiga maintained that all evacuees must leave.
One evacuee, Veveni Waqamasinika, highlighted the community’s support during this challenging time, noting that they had received significant assistance this year, particularly from local religious groups such as the Muslim community and the Hare Krishna organization. Other contributors included the People’s Alliance party in Nadi, Frenzco Beverage Limited, and various non-governmental organizations.
This situation underscores the resilience of the community in the face of adversity, as individuals come together to support one another during difficult times. Their collaborative efforts reflect the strength and unity within Nadi as they navigate the challenges posed by natural disasters.
In summary, while evacuation efforts are moving forward with the majority of families returning home, some families still face obstacles due to lingering water levels. The community’s response and support during this crisis exemplifies solidarity and hope for recovery.
