Minister for Agriculture, Waterways, and Sugar Industry Tomasi Tunabuna has announced that support will be extended to the sugar industry as it seeks to recover from the recent flood damage. The minister emphasized the importance of timely assistance, noting that there is only one crushing season, which adds urgency to the recovery efforts.
“The assistance will focus on how we can successfully return to our pre-flood operational levels,” Tunabuna stated. His remarks came as he highlighted the ongoing evaluation work conducted by his team. Currently, he awaits a comprehensive status report regarding the number of farms impacted in the Western Division, and he anticipates receiving updates shortly.
“Field teams are working around the clock to gather these figures, which I will present to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka,” he added. Tunabuna is also coordinating with teams from other ministries, including Rural Development and the Prime Minister’s Office, to gain a clearer understanding of the situation on the ground.
By consolidating findings from various sectors, Tunabuna hopes to deliver a holistic update to the Prime Minister’s Office, which will assist in formulating supportive measures for affected farmers. This collaborative approach reflects a commitment to resource recovery and community support in the face of natural disasters.
