Families in parts of Ba, Lautoka, and Tavua are reeling from the impact of last night’s heavy rainfall, which resulted in significant flooding that submerged many homes. Residents in low-lying areas have been forced to seek shelter elsewhere, as their properties became uninhabitable.
Apolosi Lewaqai, the Divisional Commissioner for Police in the Western region, provided an update on the situation today, noting that while some families have had to relocate temporarily, there is a glimmer of hope as floodwaters are beginning to recede.
He explained, “As of now the water is receding in Lautoka, Ba, and Tavua. Some families have moved to evacuation centers. Late last night, I received a call from a family in Ba who were stranded and needed to be relocated to safety. We are prepared to continue assisting people as needed until the waters have fully receded.”
Lewaqai expressed optimism, saying that today is expected to mark a return to normalcy for affected residents. “We are working to ensure that families and businesses can swiftly regain their footing and return to normal life.”
This situation serves as a reminder of the resilience of communities during adversities. As the waters recede, there is a collective hope for recovery and rebuilding in the affected regions. With support from local authorities and the community, families can look forward to restoring their lives and homes.
