In Tavualevu Village, Tavua, heavy rainfall has led to flash flooding, forcing 47 families into emergency evacuation centers. Among those affected is 45-year-old Titilia Raibe Tamailebo, whose family has been struggling since Thursday due to the devastation of their property and farm.
Ms. Tamailebo reported that their farm was destroyed and their mattresses were soaked and swept away by the floodwaters. On Friday morning, she and her family began relocating essential items and relatives to the Tavua District School evacuation center. She expressed relief for being able to salvage her washing machine and fridge but noted the loss of electricity and other kitchen appliances.
The Tamailebo family resides in a part of the village vulnerable to flooding from the nearby Nasivi River. Emosi Vueti, a village headman, stated that flash flooding has become a frequent challenge for the community, exacerbated by continuous rainfall this year. He emphasized that this problem is compounded by sediment buildup, which has made the Nasivi River shallower.
Mr. Vueti is urging the government to take action to excavate the river to prevent further flooding. He mentioned that discussions have occurred with various governmental bodies, including the Minister for Housing, Maciu Nalumisa, but warns that without meaningful intervention, their efforts may be futile.
In the meantime, Ms. Tamailebo is seeking help to replace lost items, particularly mattresses and other household necessities.
