In Tavualevu Village, Tavua, heavy rainfall has led to flash floods, forcing 47 families into evacuation centers. Among them is 45-year-old Titilia Raibe Tamailebo, who expressed her concerns as her family struggles with the loss of their property and farmland. “Our farm is destroyed, all our mattresses are wet and have all drifted away,” she lamented, recalling how they managed to move essential belongings to the Tavua District School facility after the floods began on Thursday.

Despite the challenges, Ms. Tamailebo was relieved to have saved her washing machine and fridge, but her household is currently without electricity and limited kitchen appliances. The family’s home, situated in a lower part of the village, has been particularly vulnerable to the rising waters from the Nasivi River.

Village headman Emosi Vueti echoed the ongoing struggles, noting that flash flooding has become a regular issue for the community. He pointed out that this year’s severe flooding incidents have sparked concern as the Nasivi River has become shallower due to sediment buildup from the Vatukoula River. Mr. Vueti is calling for government intervention to excavate the riverbed to prevent future flooding.

He emphasized the need for urgent action, stating that repeated discussions with the Minister for Housing and other officials have yet to yield results. Meanwhile, Ms. Tamailebo is requesting assistance to replace the mattresses and other essentials lost in the floods.

This situation highlights the resilience of the local community in the face of environmental challenges, as they seek support to rebuild and recover from the recent disaster. As preparations continue to advocate for aid, it’s a reminder of the importance of community solidarity and government response in times of crisis.
