Flood Chaos: Fiji Grapples with Heavy Rains and Road Closures

Spread the love

Fiji is facing significant disruptions as heavy rains and flash flooding have led to the closure of multiple roads across the nation. The flooding has rendered parts of Nadi town impassable, particularly evident on Christmas Day.

The Fiji Roads Authority is urging residents to exercise extreme caution when traveling and to comply with all road closures. In light of the situation, police have advised individuals living in flood-prone areas between Sigatoka and Nausori to relocate to higher ground for safety.

A heavy rain warning remains in effect, particularly for the Northern Division, where persistent heavy rainfall may result in flash flooding in susceptible regions. Additionally, a flash flood warning was issued Thursday morning for several localities, including Dreketilailai, Nayarabale, and Labasa town, as well as areas in the Central Eastern division.

Weather reports from Thursday morning indicated that Dreketilailai received 57.5mm of rain from 4 am to 7 am, while Nayarabale recorded 55mm in the same period. Over a span of 24 hours leading up to 3 am, Nayarabale experienced a total of 104mm of rainfall.

The current weather system, influenced by a trough of low pressure, is expected to continue affecting the northern regions of Fiji throughout the day. For real-time updates, residents are encouraged to check the Fiji Metservice website.

While these conditions are certainly challenging for many Fijians, there is hope that the community’s resilience will shine through as individuals and local authorities come together to navigate this crisis. In times of adversity, the spirit of cooperation can often strengthen community bonds and lead to collective recovery efforts.
