A flood alert is currently in effect for flood-prone areas located near and downstream of Fiji’s major rivers. According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, rainfall recorded in the Northern Division over the past 24 hours, from 5 am Saturday to 5 am Sunday, ranged from 30mm to 47mm.
Fortunately, water levels in all major rivers are reported to be below their flood alert thresholds. However, a flash flood warning has been issued for low-lying areas and small streams within the Northern Division, which are particularly susceptible to flooding.
An active trough of low pressure, accompanied by rain and clouds, is slowly moving over the northeastern regions of Fiji. As a result, heavy rain is expected to begin later today affecting the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, parts of the Northern Division, the Northern Lau group, as well as the western half and interior of Viti Levu.
While the situation is being closely monitored, it is crucial for residents in the affected areas to stay informed and prepared for any sudden changes in weather conditions.
It is heartening to note that water levels remain manageable for now, and with proper vigilance and preparedness, communities can navigate through this weather event safely.
