“Flood Aftermath: Families Face Tough Decisions Amid Evacuation”

While 190 evacuees have been instructed to head back home, five families have requested an extension of their stay due to high water levels still posing a risk near their residences. Andrews Primary School in Nadi has been serving as an evacuation center following severe flooding that impacted the area three days prior.

Most evacuees come from low-lying regions, particularly the Nawaijikuma and Nawakalevu settlements in Nawaka. On the previous day, Nadi District Officer, Alifereti Abenisiga, emphasized the need for evacuees to clear out of the school by 3 PM.

An evacuee, Veveni Waqamasinika, reported that while many families have returned home, the five families are concerned about the possibility of more rainfall and have requested to remain for an additional day due to ongoing concerns about water levels. Despite their request, the directive from the District Officer was for all evacuees to vacate the premises.

Waqamasinika expressed gratitude for the shelter provided, highlighting improved assistance this year from various community groups, including the Muslim community and the Hare Krishna religious organization, alongside support from the People’s Alliance Party, Frenzco Beverage Limited, South Pacific Foundation, and various NGOs.

This situation underscores the importance of community solidarity in times of crisis and the ongoing efforts to assist those affected by natural disasters. The collective support from local organizations and individuals reflects a hopeful spirit as residents work toward recovery and rebuilding.

In summary, while a large number of evacuees are returning home, a few are still facing challenges due to lingering floodwaters, yet the community’s support continues to shine through in these difficult times.
