During the ongoing trial of Tevita Kapawale, who faces multiple charges including five counts of murder, the prosecution witness Ivamere Nataro denied allegations of sexual harassment during cross-examination. The defense had claimed that Nataro attempted to gather sensitive information from Kapawale through flirtation, raising questions about the ethics of her conduct as an investigative journalist.

Justice Daine Tuiqereqere presided over the hearing in Suva, where Kapawale is accused of killing three Indonesian nationals and two Fijian men aboard the Fishing Vessel Tiro II between May 17 and 19, 2021. In addition, he has been charged with the attempted murder of bosun Mitieli Cama and criminal intimidation of the first state witness, deckhand Kaminieli Tucama.

Defense lawyers Tobia Ravuniwa and Etonia Veibataki focused their questioning on Nataro’s alleged attempts to extract information from Kapawale inappropriately, particularly regarding the events of May 18, 2021. Ravuniwa questioned the ethics of her approach, suggesting that flirtation was an unethical means of gathering testimonies related to the serious charges against Kapawale.

In response, Nataro maintained her professionalism and denied all allegations, asserting that her journalistic practices adhered to ethical standards. The cross-examination is set to continue today, indicating a thorough exploration of the evidence and witness testimonies essential to the trial.

This case underscores the complexities involved in high-profile legal matters, especially when witness credibility and journalistic integrity are put under scrutiny. As the trial progresses, it highlights the importance of maintaining ethical standards in journalism while balancing the pursuit of truth within the legal process. Additionally, it is a reminder of the gravity of the charges against Kapawale, making the unfolding judicial proceedings critical not only for the accused but also for the victims and their families awaiting justice.
