A flash flood warning is currently in effect for low-lying and flood-prone areas in the Northern Division of Fiji. Uraia Rainima, the Commissioner for the Northern Division, responded swiftly to the forecast from the Fiji Meteorological Service, which indicated strong winds in the North. Following this, he convened a meeting with leaders from essential service sectors including the Fiji Roads Authority, Fiji Police, and the National Fire Authority.

Mr. Rainima noted that despite the recent heavy rainfall, the connecting roads across the island were clear throughout the weekend. He emphasized that stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, have been notified to prepare schools that may serve as evacuation centers.

“Necessary arrangements have been put in place to respond to any emergencies,” Rainima stated. He urged the community to prioritize safety by relocating to secure locations ahead of any potential flooding, advising that preventing risk to first responders was a key consideration.

In summary, authorities are taking proactive measures to ensure public safety in light of the flash flood warning, demonstrating a commitment to preparedness and community support during adverse weather conditions. This emphasizes the importance of community cooperation and individual responsibility in times of potential crisis. Staying informed and ready can help mitigate the impacts of floods and safeguard families.
