“Five Nights at Freddy’s” continues to dominate the box office with its highly anticipated sequel, which grossed an impressive $63 million across 3,412 theaters in the U.S. and Canada this past weekend. According to studio estimates released on Sunday, the film defied expectations and has delivered the largest opening ever recorded for a weekend following Thanksgiving, a period typically characterized by lower ticket sales.
Despite facing a wave of negative reviews, “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” has achieved significant milestones, including the highest opening of the year for a PG-13 rated film and claiming the title of the second biggest horror opening, just after “The Conjuring: Last Rites.” The franchise, rooted in a narrative about murderous animatronic characters at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, continues to attract a dedicated audience.
Jim Orr, head of domestic distribution for Universal, remarked on the film’s impact, noting that it has brought a much-needed boost to the industry during a challenging time. “There’s been a lot of doom and gloom about the industry overall, but this movie helped drive the industry to the biggest first weekend post-Thanksgiving ever,” he stated.
The success of “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” signals a positive trend for the film industry, especially for horror films, underscoring that audiences remain eager for exhilarating cinematic experiences, even amid critical reviews.
