Fiji Airways men’s sevens rugby head coach Osea Kolinisau has underscored the crucial role of fitness in player selection for the upcoming HSBC Sevens World Championship in Los Angeles. In statements to the media, Kolinisau stressed that no matter a player’s skills, fitness is paramount for competing effectively at the elite level.

“Sevens is about fitness. You can have a wealth of talent, but if you’re unfit, it won’t matter,” Kolinisau remarked. He asserted that he would prefer to select players who are fully fit over those who may have a name or past accolades but cannot perform at their best physically.

To ensure optimal preparation, Kolinisau is also focusing on developing players in multiple positions to enhance team adaptability in case of injuries during the tournament. As part of this approach, he highlighted the importance of teamwork, stating, “The only X-factor we need is teamwork. That’s what wins games.”

The Fiji team will compete in a challenging pool, facing strong opponents such as New Zealand and Australia before concluding group play against Spain. The matches are scheduled for Sunday, with Fiji’s first game at 6:06 AM.

Kolinisau’s emphasis on fitness and adaptability aligns with his broader commitment to fostering a united and resilient team spirit, which is essential in sevens rugby. As the squad prepares to showcase their hard work and commitment, there is a palpable sense of optimism among players and fans alike, especially following Fiji’s recent strong performances highlighted by victories in the Singapore tournament.

In this context, the upcoming championship presents an exciting opportunity for the Fiji men’s sevens team to not only demonstrate their skills but also uphold their proud legacy in the sport, instilling hope for fans excited to see how well the team can perform under the pressures and challenges ahead.
