Team Flame Tree, led by captain Peter Levestam, is poised as the frontrunner to secure victory at the inaugural Flame Tree-sponsored Fiji Classic Game Fishing 2024, which kicks off this weekend. This exciting event is organized by the Denarau Game and Sports Fishing Club, marking its first anniversary tournament.
The competition features a host of skilled anglers, including Peter Levestam, Jared Wood from Ice T, Thakor Punja of Lunasea, Darren Smith representing Hoodlum, and Alex Leigh, along with the experienced Marc McElrath. Cristina Valente from Sidestep is the standout female angler in the lineup.
According to event coordinator Glenn Wakeman, the tournament has attracted a diverse mix of both local and international fishing enthusiasts. “The winning team will earn a coveted invitation to the Offshore World Championship in Costa Rica in 2025, along with a cash prize of $10,000,” he noted.
Participants can look forward to a variety of rewards, including prizes for different fish species, individual achievements for anglers and boats, as well as exciting spot prizes. The event will take place at the new Clubhouse at Port Denarau Marina, in proximity to Sails Restaurant.
Wakeman also highlighted that impressive cash prizes and high-quality fishing gear will be distributed throughout the competition. Major tournament accolades include the Champion Team trophy, monetary rewards for overall winners, and consolation prizes for various categories such as Champion Male, Female, Junior Anglers, and the Last Man Standing.
As the season progresses, Team Flame Tree holds a significant lead in the points tally, boasting 2313.7 points, followed closely by Ice T with 2278.4 points, and Hoodlum at 1715.5 points. The individual standings are equally competitive, with Jared Wood sitting at the top with 1771.8 points, followed by Levestam at 1500 points, Thakor Punja with 1000 points, and Darren Smith at 555.4 points.
This tournament not only fosters a sense of community among fishing aficionados but also promotes the spirit of competition, camaraderie, and sporting excellence in Fiji.
