Fishing Ban Lifted: What’s Next for Fiji’s Marine Life?

The seasonal ban on kawakawa and donu has been lifted, but the Ministry of Fisheries continues to encourage responsible fishing practices. The ministry expressed gratitude to the public for complying with the seasonal ban on grouper and coral trout, which concluded on September 30.

According to the ministry, kawakawa and donu are crucial to coastal marine ecosystems and are important for food and income. The ban aimed to protect these species during their spawning season and prevent overfishing.

The ministry warned that continued overfishing without proper management could lead to a decline in fish populations and potentially result in the collapse of the fishery.

Fisheries Minister Alitia Bainivalu urged the public to collaborate in sustaining, managing, and protecting Fiji’s fisheries and ocean resources. She emphasized the importance of practicing good stewardship and fishing responsibly and sustainably.
