Fishing Ban Lifted: What You Need to Know About Sustainability

The seasonal ban on kawakawa and donu has been lifted, but the Ministry of Fisheries is still encouraging responsible fishing practices.

In a recent statement, the ministry expressed gratitude to the public for complying with the seasonal ban on grouper and coral trout, which concluded on September 30.

“Grouper and coral trout, known as kawakawa and donu, are crucial components of coastal marine ecosystems and are greatly valued for food and income,” the statement noted. “The ban was implemented to safeguard these fish during their spawning season and to prevent overfishing of their population.”

The ministry warned that if overfishing persists in the long term without proper management, the affected fish populations could decline significantly, leading to the potential collapse of the fishery.

Minister for Fisheries Alitia Bainivalu urged the community to collaborate in sustaining, managing, and protecting Fiji’s fisheries and ocean resources.

“I encourage the public to practice responsible and sustainable fishing,” she added.
