Spread the love

Former Minister for Fisheries and Forests Kalaveti Ravu did not attend court this morning regarding allegations of abuse of office. He is charged alongside former Regional Manager North Tekata Toaisi, who was present in the Suva Magistrates Court before Magistrate Jeremaia Savou.

FICAC Counsel Lavenia Ravuikadavu informed the court that they were not notified of Ravu’s absence. She emphasized that should he fail to appear at the next hearing, FICAC would move to issue a bench warrant for his arrest. Toaisi’s lawyer, Jioji Cakau, stated that Ravu was absent due to a Parliament Committee Meeting in Nadi and assured the court that Ravu’s legal team will submit necessary pre-trial documents and disclosures to FICAC by Friday.

The charges against Ravu relate to allegations that between July 25 and August 31, 2023, he obstructed a Ministry of Forestry investigation into the illegal trade of banned beche-de-mer species. Furthermore, it is alleged that Toaisi aided Ravu in committing the abuse of office offense. The case has been rescheduled for mention on the 21st of this month, with the trial expected to commence in February.

This situation highlights the importance of accountability and transparency in public office, as officials are under scrutiny for their actions. It is crucial that the law is upheld, ensuring that individuals in positions of power face consequences for any impropriety. As the legal proceedings unfold, the commitment to justice remains a priority, inspiring hope for a system that prioritizes ethical conduct.
