The Labasa fish market has been identified as a high-risk area for pedestrians, according to Amit Deo, the asset manager for the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA). The market’s current location, which is situated before the Labasa bridge, sees significant foot traffic coupled with heavy vehicle movement, posing safety hazards for those walking in the area.
Deo mentioned that the FRA plans to engage with the Labasa Town Council executives to address this pressing issue. He revealed that the fish market is currently in a temporary location, which was highlighted during public consultations for the review of taxi permits. A request for the establishment of a pedestrian crossing at this site was brought up during those discussions. However, any further inquiries regarding this matter should be referred to the Land Transport Authority, responsible for organizing the consultation.
In response to these concerns, Labasa Town Council chairperson Paul Jaduram confirmed that a three-acre plot at the Naiyaca subdivision has been earmarked for a new fish market location. This new site will be positioned on the opposite side of the river, behind the Extra Supermarket.
This development brings hope for a safer environment for pedestrians in the future, as the relocation of the fish market aims to mitigate current risks and enhance community well-being. Moving forward, the collaboration between FRA and local authorities could pave the way for improved infrastructure and public safety in Labasa.
