Beach Volleyball Fiji has made a significant stride in promoting the sport by hosting its inaugural under-18 tournament at the National Beach Centre in Suva. This event marks a dedicated effort to revitalize beach volleyball in the nation, aiming to restore it to its former prominence.
Interim Beach Volleyball director Apenisa Saukuru emphasized the crucial role of youth development in ensuring the sport’s future in Fiji. “This is the first beginning of maybe a new era for Beach Volleyball,” Saukuru stated, highlighting the potential revitalization of the sport through the involvement of younger players.
The tournament provided an essential platform for identifying and nurturing talent, with participants from Nausori, Suva, Raiwai, and Mid-Central each fielding teams in the women’s category. In the men’s division, Mid-Central showcased their strength with four teams, while Suva represented with one team.
Saukuru remains optimistic about the talent emerging from this tournament, believing it establishes a solid foundation for the future of Fiji’s Beach Volleyball scene. With ambitions set high, Fiji is looking towards competing in prestigious events such as the Asia Volleyball Confederation Youth Championship and aiming for qualification for the Youth Olympics. Notably, the AVC tournaments are crucial as they serve as qualifiers for the Youth World Championship, presenting a valuable opportunity for Fiji’s young athletes.
The enthusiasm surrounding this tournament not only highlights the potential for personal growth among participants but also strengthens communal ties and sportsmanship within Fiji. The renewed focus on youth engagement could pave the way for a bright future in beach volleyball, fostering both national pride and international competitiveness.
