First-Time Runner Takes the Track by Storm in Fiji

Samuela Kunadei, a year 13 student from Lelean Memorial School, has taken a significant step in his athletic journey by competing in the inter-house athletics competition at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Despite having never participated in athletics before, Kunadei gathered the courage to compete and emerged victorious in both the 100m and 200m heats for the senior grade, marking a memorable debut.

This year, Kunadei decided to make the most of his final year in high school, stating, “I just wanted to compete because this is my last year in school, and this is my first time.” He expressed that the atmosphere was a bit overwhelming due to the crowd, but he thoroughly enjoyed his experience and wished he had joined athletics sooner.

If selected, Kunadei has shown his readiness to represent his school at the forthcoming Triple N Zone competition scheduled for April 1st and 2nd, also held at the HFC Bank Stadium. His enthusiasm reflects the broader commitment by Lelean Memorial School, which is preparing to send 180 students to this major athletics event. The school’s recent inter-house competition served as a crucial training ground for athletes, helping them gear up for the challenges ahead.

Assistant Principal Ulaiyasi Vakatawakoula highlighted the importance of the inter-house events, stating that they prepare students for future competitions. Many athletes, like Kunadei, have been training vigorously, with additional selections expected after the inter-house events.
