A remarkable development has unfolded for the villagers of Barotu in the Ra province of Fiji, who recently celebrated the first payout of $140,000 from their newly established Barotu Nursery and Investment Company. This venture represents a significant milestone for the community, aimed at fostering local development and sustainable practices.
Barotu village, located approximately 32 kilometers from Rakiraki town and along the Kings Highway, has a rich heritage of fishing, notably known for its abundant supply of giant mud crabs. However, the villagers have shifted their focus as they embrace the growing success of their mangrove nursery, which has emerged as a vital source of income.
With support from Conservation International, Barotu villagers undertook a project to restore their mangrove forest, leading to the establishment of a nursery that has quickly gained traction as a profitable endeavor. The nursery was set up in response to increased demand for seedlings, with the community successfully supplying 82,700 seedlings to various rural communities across the Western Division over the past year. This effort was part of the Ministry of Finance’s Jobs for Nature Project.
Conservation International indicated that the recipients of these seedlings extended from Ra to regions including Nadarivatu, Yasawa, and Nadroga. The initiative is pivotal not only in enhancing Barotu’s coastline protection but also in empowering neighboring communities to safeguard their own shores.
The establishment of the nursery faced its challenges, but with collaboration among the villagers of Saivou and support from partners, the project flourished. Village headman Mecuisela Tuilewa emphasized the critical role of community engagement, stating that the nursery has instilled pride and ownership in managing natural resources, while also fostering unity and leadership among the youth in the district.
The Barotu Nursery and Investment Company was also created to support the villagers during hardships. Since receiving its initial payout, the company has contributed to various local projects, including improvements to the village hall and footpaths, as well as assisting in community funerals. The structure and governance of the company ensure that any financial assistance is handled responsibly, with applications undergoing a thorough review by the board to ensure repayment capabilities.
This success story highlights a positive shift towards sustainable livelihood initiatives and community empowerment in Barotu, paving the way for ongoing development and resilience in the face of environmental challenges.
