The cardiac team at Lautoka Hospital, managed by Aspen Medical, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully performing its first Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS)-guided coronary stenting procedure in the newly established Cardiac Catheterization Lab. Led by Aspen Medical Consultant Cardiologist Bharatvansh Bali, the procedure was completed last week without any complications, with the patient discharged the very next day in stable condition.

IVUS technology is a sophisticated imaging method that enables healthcare professionals to visualize the interior of coronary arteries through ultrasound from within the blood vessel. This technique, which is akin to placing a miniature camera within the artery, allows clinicians to accurately evaluate the severity and extent of artery narrowing while customizing treatment with greater precision. The use of IVUS not only reduces the likelihood of future re-narrowing but also enhances long-term patient outcomes.

Dr. Bali expressed that the introduction of IVUS-guided stenting marks a vital enhancement in cardiac care within Fiji. He stated, “This technology allows us to make better clinical decisions and deliver optimal care locally. It represents a major step forward in providing advanced interventional cardiology services for patients in Fiji.” He highlighted that this new capability enables patients suffering from complicated heart diseases to receive high-quality, evidence-based interventional procedures locally at Lautoka Hospital, eliminating the need for overseas travel for treatment.

This landmark achievement is a testament to Aspen Medical’s commitment to enhancing specialized healthcare services in Fiji and providing improved access to advanced cardiac treatments for patients nationwide. As healthcare continues to evolve, such advancements promise a brighter future for cardiac care, ensuring that patients receive the best possible medical attention without unnecessary burdens.
