Salote Drauna recently rejoiced in the milestone achievement of graduating with a bachelor’s degree in nursing alongside 100 other students from the Sangam School of Nursing and Health Care Education. Her journey to graduation, however, has been fraught with challenges that have tested her resilience.

Two years ago, Drauna found herself compelled to withdraw from her studies due to an unexpected pregnancy. Despite this setback, her determination to achieve her dream of becoming a nurse never wavered. After rejoining the program this year, she faced the demanding task of balancing motherhood with her rigorous studies.

“Balancing being a mum and studying was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done,” Drauna reflected, as she recounted sleepless nights caring for her newborn son while juggling long hours at hospital placements. With each day, she balanced her responsibilities as a mother to her first child and her commitment to her nursing education, often working through emotional challenges and exhaustion.

The support of her mother proved crucial during this time. Drauna expressed immense gratitude for her mother’s assistance in childcare, stating, “Without her support, I don’t think I would have made it this far.” This familial support allowed Drauna to focus on her studies and clinical hours, which frequently kept her away from home.

Achieving her nursing degree was especially significant for Drauna, marking her as the first in her family to reach this milestone. “I feel overwhelmed and excited. Today I have graduated, and it’s a very proud moment,” she shared.

Drauna’s passion for nursing was ignited at a young age as she helped care for her sick grandparents. Her aspirations were further fueled by her late aunt Unaisi Drauna, who had a profound influence on her decision to pursue nursing at Sangam School rather than the Fiji School of Nursing. Drauna honored her aunt’s memory, expressing her belief that she would be proud to witness her achievement.

Drauna’s story embodies resilience and the enduring strength of family support. She serves as an inspiring example for other young mothers striving for educational goals. Her journey illustrates that while challenges may arise, determination and support can lead to triumph. Reflecting on her hard work, Drauna concluded, “All the hard work, all the late nights, the sacrifices, it was all worth it today.”

For her family, Drauna’s graduation is not just about personal achievement; it symbolizes breaking barriers, pursuing dreams, and honoring those who inspire them.
