At 42 years old, Vani Sokomuri has made history as the first member of her family to earn a tertiary education qualification. She was one of 28 graduates from the Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam College of Nursing and Health Care Education, receiving a National Certificate in Aged Care and Community Care Level Three.

During the graduation ceremony held at the Civic Centre in Labasa, Ms. Sokomuri, who is expecting her seventh child, recounted her remarkable journey of dedication over the past six months. “After putting all my children to sleep, I would study until 1 a.m.,” she shared. “At times, I would fall asleep with them only to wake up at 2 a.m. to continue studying before preparing breakfast and sending them off to school.”

Her weekdays were characterized by a hectic schedule. “From Monday to Friday felt like rush hour,” she explained. After ensuring her children were ready for school and arranging care for her youngest, she made it a priority to be in class by 8 a.m.

Hailing from Baravi Village in Navakasiga, Bua, Ms. Sokomuri is the eldest of six siblings and was honored with the Best Clinical Student Female award. Although she completed Year 13 at Labasa Sangam (SKM) College and began her studies in a Bachelor of Commerce program at the University of the South Pacific, financial pressures led her to pause her education to focus on her family after marriage.

“I have always aspired to study,” she reflected. “Like many others, I dreamed of receiving a tertiary education and being a role model for my children, demonstrating that dreams should never be forsaken.” She also expressed her gratitude to her husband, Napolioni Latianara, an officer with the Labasa Corrections Service, for his unwavering support throughout her educational journey.

This inspiring story highlights the importance of perseverance and the pursuit of education, regardless of life’s challenges. Vani Sokomuri’s achievement not only sets a remarkable example for her children but also serves as a reminder to others that it is never too late to chase one’s dreams.

In summary, Vani’s journey reflects resilience and commitment, showing that hard work and determination can lead to success, inspiring others to aim high and overcome their obstacles.
